OUR PUMA FAM IN THE SPOTLIGHT

August 11, 2025

Meet Shirley Li, Managing Director of PUMA Greater China – fearless optimist with a passion for people, progress, and the occasional HIIT workout. Based in Shanghai, Shirley’s path from Fu Dan University grad to PUMA game-changer is fueled by sincerity, strategy, and a love for building winning teams. In our latest “Get To Know,” she talks SUEDEs, her parking skills, and the power of staying focused under pressure. Let’s dive in!

Shirley, what does greatness look like to you, personally?

For me, the success of an individual is called achievement. The success of a group of people is excellence. And if a group of people can achieve success in adversity, that is truly GREATNESS.

A great leader in adversity requires more qualities than a leader in prosperity. It needs belief, inspiration, patience, and resilience. It needs strategic choices, trade-offs, and sometimes tough decisions.

Do you remember your first PUMA product? What was it, and when did you get it?

SUEDE. I bought it in 2023 before I joined the PUMA family.

What core values guide you in life?

Sincerity and optimism.

Sincerity is speaking the truth and being honest with others.

Optimism is staying positive and finding opportunities even in adversity.

What’s one achievement that still lights you up inside?

I felt happy about what we achieved in business over the past two years, such as leading low-profile trends, digital retail, omni-channel set-up, shoe box success, etc. However, beyond all these, I think the biggest achievement that lights me up is building a winning team and a winning culture. Developing a team with the same vision, the same dream, and fighting to win toward our goal makes me happiest. Success is not a one-man or one-woman show, but a team effort. In a recent Peakon survey, the overall score in China was pretty high, which makes me very proud.

What do you love doing when you’re free to be completely yourself?

Running, HIIT, reading, watching movies, or getting a massage.

You’ve got one evening in a brand-new city – where does your curiosity take you?

I’d walk on the street to feel the people and the culture.

What have you learned about yourself in a moment that truly challenged you?

When I face a truly challenging moment, I try to focus completely on the solution. FOCUS helps me pull through tough times.

What’s something that never fails to embarrass you (but still makes you smile later)?

My driving skills are terrible. I once drove with the trunk open the whole way, without realizing it. And my reverse parking skills are super poor as well — you can imagine the situation, haha! 🙂

What part of yourself are you most grateful for?
Sincerity.

Which movie or fictional character do you secretly identify with, and why?

It’s hard to find a character I completely identify with, but one of my favorite characters is Erin Brockovich, played by Julia Roberts. Every tough moment in life is an excellent opportunity to redefine ourselves. I like the heroine’s spirit of “Never give up.”

What kind of mistakes are easiest for you to forgive?

When a team actively tries innovative ideas for the good of the business but fails, I encourage this as long as the risk is under control. If you fail, fail quickly, learn from it, and move on.

Which book is currently on your bedside table?

One is The Art of War by Sun Tzu.

It’s a Chinese classic, useful not only in the military but also in business.

For example:
“Concentrate superior forces to annihilate the enemy.
When the upper and lower levels share the same aspiration, victory is assured.”

Another book is A Non-Dominant Mother.

It’s an education book that teaches us how to “control your desire to control and examine our parenting philosophy.” I have a 13-year-old daughter, and this book helps me reflect and become a better mom.

If you had a personal motto, what would it be?

Love your life, and never stop learning.

Big thank you, Shirley, for sharing your story with us!
