PUMA STARTS A SERIES OF MONTHLY CREATIVE INTERACTION WITH ARTISTS FROM DIFFERENT BACKGROUNDS

June 25, 2018

Working in a creative environment for a brand that is Forever Faster also means to continuously develop oneself further. Sometimes, that works best through sharing experiences and interacting with others.

Not only with colleagues, but with creative people from a fashion, design, arts and music background. That is why PUMA started the series “In conversation with”.

We want our people at PUMA and creative people from other backgrounds to start a creative conversation and to share their experiences. For the first conversation, we just invited PUMA’s creative teams, but in the future, we want to invite a broad audience, so that everybody who is interested can profit from the interaction.

Yassine Saidi, PUMA Senior Head of Select

The first artists to join PUMA on the creative journey were Os Gêmeos. Behind “The Twins” are the Brazilian graffiti and street artists Otavio and Gustavo Pandolfo. They are the most important representatives of this art form in Brazil and work on projects all over the world. Their works often feature yellow-skinned characters, but are otherwise diverse, ranging from tags to complicated murals that can be several meters high.

The artists from Sao Paulo found their passion after they saw the 1984 Breakdance movie “Beat Street”, through which they got in touch with the street artist scene. As they have been into drawing together since as long as they can remember, they just continued doing that in the streets of Sao Paulo.

In 1993, an encounter brought them together with American painter and graffiti professional Barry McGee, who liked their art and saw their phone number painted on a wall.

That was the starting point of Os Gêmeos’ creative journey, from painting the streets and walls in Sao Paulo with brushes and façade paint to the famous artists they are today creating installations, sculptures and murals. “We believe that, if you put something special out in the world, it will bring people together and they will connect with each other.”

With that belief, Os Gêmeos were the perfect first guests to share their experiences with the creative teams at PUMA. And although they never explain what is behind their paintings or creations, they had valuable tips for the people at PUMA:

Love what you do

“Life is too short for things or jobs that you don’t like. We know, sometimes you have to do things you don’t like, of course. We did that for many, many years as well. But after a while you eventually reach the point where you can choose to work on things you like. And if you design something that you don’t like a 100 % try again! And again, and again, until you love it.”

Be clear about what you want to create and who you want to be

“If you just started and haven’t reached the point yet, where you can only do the things you love, think about what you want to do and what you like. At the beginning, you have to learn constantly about yourself and your work. In doing that, enjoy it as much as you can and think about it as fun, not as a burden or something like that.”

If you have a deadline and a creative blockade, do something else

“Sometimes, we have the same problem. But we found a balance. In the past, we oftentimes felt the pressure of having to create something right now. But now it’s more like: Okay, we have to paint that wall, so let’s go somewhere else and make some music. It is important to find a balance in the things you do. That means, if you have a blockade, do something else. Go out with your friends, clear your head and refresh your ideas.”
