Help tackling local water challenges

Fernandinho & Mancity’s premier league Trophy visited #CityzensGiving project in São Paulo
April 1, 2022
In frame of World Water Day, PUMA Athlete Fernandinho and the ManCity Premier League trophy paid a special visit to Vila Albertina in São Paulo where #CityzensGiving Young Leaders are using the power of football to help tackle local water challenges.
Fernandinho participated in football and water education activity, engaged in group discussions with young leaders, and spent time learning how Xylem water technology solutions are helping to provide more consistent access to clean water at the project centre.
“It was inspiring to meet young leaders from my home country who are so passionate about changing lives in their community through football. Visiting the project on World Water Day and being able to see first-hand what it means to young people in Vila Albertina was an incredible experience.” – Fernandinho

To celebrate World Water Day, all projects were holding football and water education festivals, bringing together 600 children from local communities. Manchester City Captain and PUMA athlete Fernandinho surprised young leaders and children at their festival in São Paulo.

Vila Albertina is dealing with rising issues of water scarcity. Xylem and Fundación Avina have installed a rainwater capture and re-use system at the project’s main centre, providing more consistent access to clean water year-round. This complements the work of the young leaders in local schools, using football-based games to educate young people on the importance of water and its conscious consumption. The visit also saw the return of in-person training for Young Leaders for the first time since the pandemic.

ABOUT #CityzensGiving

Clean and accessible water is crucial, yet 1 in 3 people worldwide lack access to safe drinking water. To help address this challenge, PUMA has partnered with Cityzens Giving and the Club’s Official Water Technology Partner Xylem to deliver an innovative global program, blending football-based education on water, sanitation and hygiene, and clean water access for communities in need.

The ambition is to reach over 10,000 young people in 3 continents, focusing on Manchester, São Paulo, Buenos Aires and Mumbai. The program has just kicked off with the creation of a clean water tower in Mumbai, producing a safe and long-term supply of fresh drinking water for 1,800 people per day.
