How can a simple press conference spark a global media frenzy? Sprinting legend and Olympic champion Linford Christie, one of the most successful track & field athletes of his day, knew how.
When the eyes of the world were on him at the Olympic Games in Atlanta in 1996, Linford stared back with a pair of custom-made PUMA contact lenses and created one of the most iconic images in sports and marketing history. Thirty years later, we revisit this exceptional moment.

The Making of a Champion

Linford was the first athlete ever to simultaneously hold the Olympic, World, European and Commonwealth 100-metre titles. He set British and European records, won gold on every major stage the sport has to offer and became the first European to break the 10-second barrier. To this day, he remains the oldest men’s 100-metre gold medalist in the history of both the Olympic Games and the World Championships.
“You must train not like a champion, but like the person chasing the champion.”

PUMA Love and Bold Moves

Linford’s personality was just as distinctive as his performances. His sporting achievements were only one part of the legacy he built.

Throughout his career Linford was never shy about looking for unique ways to show his love for the brand and PUMA always gave him the freedom to express himself. Eye-catching race suits, bold styling choices and creative ideas became part of who he was as an athlete.

Always pushing himself to go one step further, he turned heads at the Weltklasse Zürich track and field event in 1995 with a prominent PUMA sticker on his chest.
For the Atlanta Olympics a year later, he had an even bolder idea – one that would enter the history books.

The Eyes That Captivated the World

On July 25, 1996, one day before the opening round of the men’s 100 metres, PUMA hosted a press conference in Atlanta.

Linford arrived wearing a pair of dark sunglasses and calmly took his seat. A few moments later, he removed the glasses.

Suddenly, the room understood what he had been hiding.

Looking back at the journalists were two bright blue contact lenses featuring PUMA’s iconic leaping cat logo.

The reaction was instant. Cameras flashed, reporters rushed to capture the moment and images of the press conference quickly travelled around the world. The story became global news within hours.
Worldwide media attention about this historical moment in sport and marketing history
Pascal Rolling, who was part of the PUMA team in Atlanta, still remembers the moment vividly.
“When Linford took off his sunglasses, the room changed. Within minutes journalists and photographers were scrambling to capture the story. We knew we had witnessed something special.”
— Pascal Rolling, Director Sports Marketing Running
Despite the attention it generated, Linford always maintained that the idea was never primarily about advertising. Instead, it reflected his personality: taking risks, challenging expectations and finding new ways to bring energy and entertainment to the sport.

A Legacy That Lives On

The images from Atlanta have long since transcended sport. What began as a spontaneous idea of an athlete has become one of the defining visuals of modern sports culture – an iconic moment that sits alongside the most memorable athlete-brand partnerships ever created.
It remains one of the most iconic and widely featured moments in sports marketing history, continuing to inspire new generations of campaigns and creative work. Most recently, the moment returned once again in the new A$AP ROCKY x PUMA SUEDE ’94 campaign.
