D\u00e8s 1873, le m\u00e9decin anglais William Benjamin Carpenter a d\u00e9couvert que l'imagination intense d'un mouvement sans l'ex\u00e9cuter r\u00e9ellement entra\u00eene une tension des muscles concern\u00e9s. Il a \u00e9t\u00e9 prouv\u00e9 que le fait d'imaginer des habilet\u00e9s motrices provoque des m\u00e9canismes de r\u00e9troaction.
