We caught up with Vladimir Gorobets, General Manager of PUMA Russia and Ukraine, to talk about his career, the peculiarities of PUMA\\u2019s business in those countries as well as well as his vision for the future.\\nAt first sight, Russia and Ukraine are not difficult markets. \\u201cOur favorite shoe is the ST Runner in a triple black colorway,\\u201d Vladimir smiles. \\u201cNothing dramatic: simple, stylish, black and practical.\\u201d The long winters in both countries also require a solid line-up of winterized outfits.\\nBut that where it stops being simple. In order to push high-end products to customers, you have to set up your own retail infrastructure, which is exactly what Vladimir did during his more than 15 years at PUMA.\\nWhen Vladimir was 24, he joined PUMA in his native Ukraine, where he took on the project of establishing owned-and-operated retail stores in the country. \\u201cWhen I started in Ukraine, we had one store,\\u201d Vladimir recalls. In just 3 years\\u2019 time, Vladimir and his team opened 20 PUMA shops in the country.\\nFollowing his success in Ukraine, Vladimir joined the PUMA Russia team as Head of Retail. \\u201cWhen I came to Russia, retail was about 35 percent of the business, five years later it was 50\\\/50, now retail is the majority of the business,\\u201d he says \\u2013 an impressive track record which eventually saw him get promoted to GM of Russia and Ukraine. But Vladimir says that career planning was never the thing that made him get up in the morning.\\n\\u201cTo be honest, I focused on what was right for the brand. I didn\\u2019t think much about career planning. Pour proposer des produits haut de gamme aux clients, il faut mettre en place sa propre infrastructure de vente au d\u00e9tail, ce que Vladimir a fait pendant plus de 15 ans chez PUMA.<br\/>\n<br\/>\u00c0 l'\u00e2ge de 24 ans, Vladimir a rejoint PUMA dans son pays natal, l'Ukraine, o\u00f9 il s'est vu confier le projet de cr\u00e9er des magasins de d\u00e9tail g\u00e9r\u00e9s en propre dans le pays. \u201c<strong>Lorsque j'ai commenc\u00e9 en Ukraine, nous n'avions qu'un seul magasin,<\/strong>\u201d se souvient Vladimir. Je n'ai pas beaucoup r\u00e9fl\u00e9chi \u00e0 la planification de ma carri\u00e8re. Lorsqu'il a rejoint PUMA Russie en 2010, il a \u00e9t\u00e9 charg\u00e9 de redresser l'entreprise et de mettre en place une plateforme de croissance durable. \u201c<strong>J'\u00e9tais tr\u00e8s motiv\u00e9e au d\u00e9but et je me suis fix\u00e9 des attentes irr\u00e9alistes, surtout pour moi-m\u00eame<\/strong>,explique-t-il.<br\/>\n<br\/>Travailler plus de 12 heures par jour, y compris pendant les week-ends, a commenc\u00e9 \u00e0 peser sur son corps. Il a commenc\u00e9 \u00e0 se sentir \u00e9puis\u00e9, tant physiquement que mentalement.<br\/>\n<br\/>\u201c<strong>J'ai ignor\u00e9 le fait qu'un bon repos est une partie importante de l'exercice d'entra\u00eenement pour les athl\u00e8tes comme pour les managers.<\/strong>,\u201d, se souvient-il. \u201c<strong>La meilleure chose que j'ai faite a \u00e9t\u00e9 d'en parler \u00e0 mon patron. Il a rapidement compris que j'\u00e9tais proche du burn out et m'a conseill\u00e9 de faire une pause<\/strong>.\u201d<br\/>\n<br\/>Huit mois seulement apr\u00e8s que Vladimir a \u00e9t\u00e9 nomm\u00e9 directeur g\u00e9n\u00e9ral de la Russie et de l'Ukraine, la pand\u00e9mie a frapp\u00e9 et contraint les deux march\u00e9s \u00e0 la paralysie. De nombreux magasins pour lesquels Vladimir avait travaill\u00e9 si dur ont d\u00fb fermer du jour au lendemain.<br\/>\n<br\/>\u201c<strong>Personne ne savait comment g\u00e9rer ce genre de situation<\/strong>,\u201d, explique Vladimir. Selon lui, la cl\u00e9 du succ\u00e8s de PUMA a \u00e9t\u00e9 de prendre les d\u00e9fis de la pand\u00e9mie au s\u00e9rieux d\u00e8s le premier jour et de prot\u00e9ger les clients et le personnel, tout en travaillant dur pour poursuivre l'activit\u00e9. En p\u00e9riode d'incertitude, il \u00e9tait \u00e9galement important de communiquer clairement et d'\u00eatre transparent, tout en gardant l'esprit \u201c Forever Faster \u201d (toujours plus vite) pour r\u00e9agir rapidement \u00e0 une situation en constante \u00e9volution.<br\/>\n<br\/>\u201c<strong>En traversant cette crise, j'ai \u00e9t\u00e9 impressionn\u00e9, car j'ai vu de nombreux exemples de v\u00e9ritable leadership, d'engagement et m\u00eame d'h\u00e9ro\u00efsme dans mon \u00e9quipe locale et dans les \u00e9quipes du monde entier. Les personnes qui m'entourent m'ont beaucoup motiv\u00e9 !<\/strong>\u201d dit Vladimir.<br\/>\n<br\/>Et cette attitude a port\u00e9 ses fruits. Malgr\u00e9 la pand\u00e9mie, PUMA a fortement augment\u00e9 ses ventes en Russie et en Ukraine en 2020 et a pris des parts de march\u00e9 \u00e0 ses concurrents.<br\/>\n<br\/>\u00c0 long terme, Vladimir pense que le fait de positionner clairement PUMA comme une marque de sport contribuera \u00e0 renforcer la cr\u00e9dibilit\u00e9 de la marque aupr\u00e8s des consommateurs.<br\/>\n<br\/>Pour ce faire, PUMA a renforc\u00e9 sa pr\u00e9sence dans le football en s'associant au Shakhtar Donetsk, champion d'Ukraine. \u201c<strong>Au d\u00e9but, nous n'avions aucune pr\u00e9sence dans le football ukrainien. S'associer \u00e0 l'une des meilleures \u00e9quipes du pays \u00e9tait donc une grande nouvelle pour notre r\u00e9gion<\/strong>,Vladimir a d\u00e9clar\u00e9 : \u201dNous sommes tr\u00e8s heureux d'\u00eatre en mesure d'offrir des services de qualit\u00e9 \u00e0 nos clients.<br\/>\n<br\/>En Russie, PUMA a \u00e9galement augment\u00e9 r\u00e9guli\u00e8rement son portefeuille de clubs, en annon\u00e7ant r\u00e9cemment un accord avec le Dynamo Moscou, un club qui a une longue histoire couronn\u00e9e de succ\u00e8s et qui compte de nombreux fans fid\u00e8les et engag\u00e9s. L'ann\u00e9e prochaine, cinq des 16 \u00e9quipes de la premi\u00e8re division russe seront \u00e9quip\u00e9es par PUMA : le Dynamo, Krasnodar, Khimki, Rostov ainsi que le Krylia Sovetov, qui sera promu la saison prochaine.<br\/>\n<br\/>Quelle est la prochaine \u00e9tape pour PUMA en Russie et en Ukraine ? O\u00f9 allons-nous \u201c ne voir que du beau \u201d ?<br\/>\n<br\/>\u201c<strong>D'une mani\u00e8re g\u00e9n\u00e9rale, je constate une forte tendance \u00e0 des modes de vie plus sains et plus sportifs partout dans le monde. When he joined PUMA Russia in 2010, he was tasked with turning around the business and building a platform for sustainable growth. \u201c\\u0026lt;strong\\u0026gt;I was super motivated in the beginning and set unrealistic expectations, most of all for myself\\u0026lt;\/strong\\u0026gt;,\u201d he explains.\\u0026lt;br\/\\u0026gt;\\n\\u0026lt;br\/\\u0026gt;Working for more than 12 hours every day, also during weekends, started taking a toll on his body. He started feeling exhausted, both physically and mentally.\\u0026lt;br\/\\u0026gt;\\n\\u0026lt;br\/\\u0026gt;\u201c\\u0026lt;strong\\u0026gt;I ignored the simple fact that getting a good rest is an important part of the training exercise for athletes and managers alike\\u0026lt;\/strong\\u0026gt;,\u201d he recalls. \u201c\\u0026lt;strong\\u0026gt;The best thing I did was talking to my boss. He quickly understood that I was close to a burn out and advised me to take a break\\u0026lt;\/strong\\u0026gt;.\u201d\\u0026lt;br\/\\u0026gt;\\n\\u0026lt;br\/\\u0026gt;Just eight months after Vladimir had become the General Manager of Russia and Ukraine, the pandemic struck and forced both markets into a lockdown. Many of the stores for which Vladimir had worked so hard had to close from one day to the other.\\u0026lt;br\/\\u0026gt;\\n\\u0026lt;br\/\\u0026gt;\u201c\\u0026lt;strong\\u0026gt;Nobody out there knew how to deal with that kind of situation\\u0026lt;\/strong\\u0026gt;,\u201d Vladimir says. He believes that the key to PUMA\u2019s success was to take the challenges of the pandemic seriously from day one and protect customers and staff, while working hard to keep the business going. In times of uncertainty, it was also important to communicate clearly and to be transparent, while keeping up that \u201cForever Faster\u201d spirit to quickly react to an ever-changing situation.\\u0026lt;br\/\\u0026gt;\\n\\u0026lt;br\/\\u0026gt;\u201c\\u0026lt;strong\\u0026gt;Going through this crisis, I was impressed, as I saw many examples of true leadership, commitment and even heroism in my local team and at the teams across the globe. The people around me motivated me a lot!\\u0026lt;\/strong\\u0026gt;\u201d Vladimir says.\\u0026lt;br\/\\u0026gt;\\n\\u0026lt;br\/\\u0026gt;And this attitude paid off. In spite of the pandemic, PUMA strongly grew its sales in both Russia and Ukraine during 2020 and took market share from its competitors.\\u0026lt;br\/\\u0026gt;\\n\\u0026lt;br\/\\u0026gt;In the long run, Vladimir believes that clearly positioning PUMA as a sports brand will help boost the brand\u2019s credibility with consumers.\\u0026lt;br\/\\u0026gt;\\n\\u0026lt;br\/\\u0026gt;To achieve this, PUMA boosted its presence in football, by teaming up with Ukrainian football champions Shakhtar Donetsk. \u201c\\u0026lt;strong\\u0026gt;At the start, we had zero presence in Ukrainian football. So, teaming up with one of the best teams in the country was very big news for our area\\u0026lt;\/strong\\u0026gt;,\u201d Vladimir says.\\u0026lt;br\/\\u0026gt;\\n\\u0026lt;br\/\\u0026gt;In Russia, PUMA also steadily increased its portfolio of clubs, most recently announcing a deal with Dynamo Moscow, a club with a long and successful history and many committed and loyal fans. Next year, five out of the 16 teams in Russia\u2019s topflight will be equipped by PUMA: Dynamo, Krasnodar, Khimki, Rostov as well as Krylia Sovetov, which will be promoted next season.\\u0026lt;br\/\\u0026gt;\\n\\u0026lt;br\/\\u0026gt;So, what\u2019s next for PUMA in Russia and Ukraine? When he joined PUMA Russia in 2010, he was tasked with turning around the business and building a platform for sustainable growth. \u201c\\u0026lt;strong\\u0026gt;I was super motivated in the beginning and set unrealistic expectations, most of all for myself\\u0026lt;\/strong\\u0026gt;,\u201d he explains.\\u0026lt;br\/\\u0026gt;\\n\\u0026lt;br\/\\u0026gt;Working for more than 12 hours every day, also during weekends, started taking a toll on his body. He started feeling exhausted, both physically and mentally.\\u0026lt;br\/\\u0026gt;\\n\\u0026lt;br\/\\u0026gt;\u201c\\u0026lt;strong\\u0026gt;I ignored the simple fact that getting a good rest is an important part of the training exercise for athletes and managers alike\\u0026lt;\/strong\\u0026gt;,\u201d he recalls. \u201c\\u0026lt;strong\\u0026gt;The best thing I did was talking to my boss. He quickly understood that I was close to a burn out and advised me to take a break\\u0026lt;\/strong\\u0026gt;.\u201d\\u0026lt;br\/\\u0026gt;\\n\\u0026lt;br\/\\u0026gt;Just eight months after Vladimir had become the General Manager of Russia and Ukraine, the pandemic struck and forced both markets into a lockdown. Many of the stores for which Vladimir had worked so hard had to close from one day to the other.\\u0026lt;br\/\\u0026gt;\\n\\u0026lt;br\/\\u0026gt;\u201c\\u0026lt;strong\\u0026gt;Nobody out there knew how to deal with that kind of situation\\u0026lt;\/strong\\u0026gt;,\u201d Vladimir says. He believes that the key to PUMA\u2019s success was to take the challenges of the pandemic seriously from day one and protect customers and staff, while working hard to keep the business going. In times of uncertainty, it was also important to communicate clearly and to be transparent, while keeping up that \u201cForever Faster\u201d spirit to quickly react to an ever-changing situation.\\u0026lt;br\/\\u0026gt;\\n\\u0026lt;br\/\\u0026gt;\u201c\\u0026lt;strong\\u0026gt;Going through this crisis, I was impressed, as I saw many examples of true leadership, commitment and even heroism in my local team and at the teams across the globe. The people around me motivated me a lot!\\u0026lt;\/strong\\u0026gt;\u201d Vladimir says.\\u0026lt;br\/\\u0026gt;\\n\\u0026lt;br\/\\u0026gt;And this attitude paid off. In spite of the pandemic, PUMA strongly grew its sales in both Russia and Ukraine during 2020 and took market share from its competitors.\\u0026lt;br\/\\u0026gt;\\n\\u0026lt;br\/\\u0026gt;In the long run, Vladimir believes that clearly positioning PUMA as a sports brand will help boost the brand\u2019s credibility with consumers.\\u0026lt;br\/\\u0026gt;\\n\\u0026lt;br\/\\u0026gt;To achieve this, PUMA boosted its presence in football, by teaming up with Ukrainian football champions Shakhtar Donetsk. \u201c\\u0026lt;strong\\u0026gt;At the start, we had zero presence in Ukrainian football. So, teaming up with one of the best teams in the country was very big news for our area\\u0026lt;\/strong\\u0026gt;,\u201d Vladimir says.\\u0026lt;br\/\\u0026gt;\\n\\u0026lt;br\/\\u0026gt;In Russia, PUMA also steadily increased its portfolio of clubs, most recently announcing a deal with Dynamo Moscow, a club with a long and successful history and many committed and loyal fans. Next year, five out of the 16 teams in Russia\u2019s topflight will be equipped by PUMA: Dynamo, Krasnodar, Khimki, Rostov as well as Krylia Sovetov, which will be promoted next season.\\u0026lt;br\/\\u0026gt;\\n\\u0026lt;br\/\\u0026gt;So, what\u2019s next for PUMA in Russia and Ukraine?
