Borussia M\u00f6nchengladbach was founded 125 years ago. Around 50 years ago, the team wore a PUMA jersey for the first time.<\/span><\/div>\n <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

It was a small sensation: When Borussia M\u00f6nchengladbach first stepped onto the pitch in PUMA jerseys around 50 years ago, it was a visible sign of a partnership \u2013 and the beginning of a new era in football. On the left chest: the embroidered club crest. On the inside: the PUMA cat \u2013 clearly visible on heavy cotton fabric, produced by Reutlingen-based manufacturer G.+A. Leuze. A statement in cloth.<\/div>\n <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

“The stitching rubbed their nipples raw. Especially those early models with thick embroidery. But that was football \u2013 nobody complained.”<\/p>recalls Helmut Fischer, known as “Mr. PUMA.”<\/strong> <\/div>\n <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Adding to that were the typical PUMA sleeve stripes, often green and white, with slight variations depending on the game or delivery batch. Production was pragmatic \u2013 during the first half of the 1974\/75 season Gladbach often wore different shirts than in the second half.<\/div>\n <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

The Foals ran in PUMA<\/h2><\/span>Founded in August 1900, in the M\u00f6nchengladbach district of Eicken, Borussia emerged from the Marian Youth Congregation. A year earlier, 13 players had left TV Germania in protest. Borussia grew steadily, winning the DFB Cup sensationally in 1960, and gaining promotion to the Bundesliga in 1965 \u2013 becoming a cult team of the 1970s: The Foals.

G\u00fcnter Netzer, Berti Vogts, Jupp Heynckes, Rainer Bonhof, Lothar Matthaeus or trainer legends Hennes Weisweiler and Udo Lattek \u2013 names that still shine today. All wore PUMA.<\/div>\n <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n

“Borussia back then was the opposite of showmanship. Fast, direct, unpolished. That\u2019s exactly what we tried to reflect in the design.”<\/p>says Helmut Fischer.<\/strong><\/div>\n <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Even before the jerseys, PUMA was already in play \u2013 with boots. G\u00fcnter Netzer introduced the \u201cNetzer-Azur\u201d in 1971, and the \u201cNetzer-Super\u201d in 1968. One catalog read: \u201cNational player G\u00fcnter Netzer presents his PUMA models: Upper made of premium leather, padded collar, PUMA Fers-O-Til, PUMANylon sole with screw-in studs.\u201d

Back then, colorful boots were rare. Only stars like Netzer dared to wear blue and yellow shoes.<\/div>\n <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

“They were available in stores but didn\u2019t sell \u2013 no one wanted them. We were 20 or 30 years too early,”<\/p>says Helmut Fischer.<\/strong><\/div>\n <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Helanka, Rayon, Polyester \u2013 the Fabric Revolution<\/h2><\/span>The jerseys of the 1970s marked a textile turning point. First came training suits made of Helanka \u2013 elastic, but prone to sagging. Then came shiny rayon jerseys \u2013 designed as \u201cfloodlight kits\u201d because they sparkled under the lights like freshly polished cars. Eventually came polyester \u2013 lighter, more functional, breathable. With the 80s came evolution.<\/div>\n <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

“We tested those fabrics \u2013 for sweat absorption, airflow, stress resistance. And we turned them into something more than clothing. It was functional identity.”<\/p>says Ulrich Planer, Lead PUMA Archive.<\/strong> <\/div>\n <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

DFB regulations had long banned logos on kits \u2013 they were officially permitted only in the mid-1970s.<\/div>\n <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

“Before that, there were no official PUMA jerseys. Neither logos nor design elements were allowed. It wasn\u2019t until 1974 that things slowly changed. In the catalog it said, \u2018One of the top teams and their kit\u2019 \u2013 but there\u2019s no PUMA logo on the shirt, just on the shorts.”<\/p>Helmut Fischer explains.<\/strong> <\/div>\n <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

The Cat that Scratched<\/h2><\/span>Production was handled by Leuze and Palme, under contract with PUMA.
In 1974, the time had come: Borussia was fully outfitted by PUMA for the first time \u2013 from boots to socks. A partnership that began with footwear and culminated in full kits.<\/div>\n <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n
