Practiqu\u00e9 senderismo por la costa este de Australia con mi familia la mayor\u00eda de los veranos, celebr\u00e9 la finalizaci\u00f3n del instituto con un trekking de 5 d\u00edas por las monta\u00f1as de Tasmania, puse mis miras en el extranjero y explor\u00e9 el Himalaya de Nepal, y pas\u00e9 5 semanas recorriendo Espa\u00f1a a pie por el Camino de Santiago. Cada d\u00eda era un reto y cada d\u00eda era incre\u00edble.<br\/>\n<br\/>Pero entonces, a finales de mis 20 a\u00f1os, el senderismo desapareci\u00f3 de mi lista de prioridades.<strong> Me perd\u00ed en una apretada agenda de trabajo y una agitada vida social.<\/strong> Mi energ\u00eda hab\u00eda deca\u00eddo: me sent\u00eda perezosa, de mal humor y me faltaba concentraci\u00f3n. Por suerte para m\u00ed, fue entonces cuando un dietista me recet\u00f3 \u2018tomar un ba\u00f1o de bosque\u2019 para remediar mis problemas.<br\/>\n<br\/>Una vez que empec\u00e9 a investigar, el mensaje era claro: mi estr\u00e9s diario hab\u00eda agotado mi bater\u00eda y necesitaba una dosis de naturaleza.<br\/>\n<br\/>Esto supuso un cambio profundo para m\u00ed. En todos mis a\u00f1os de senderismo, hab\u00eda dado por sentado su impacto en la creaci\u00f3n de una salud mental y un bienestar positivos. La conexi\u00f3n entre ambos se convirti\u00f3 en mi nueva obsesi\u00f3n, y tras volver a centrarme -gracias a Coast Track- pude recuperar mi energ\u00eda.<br\/>\n<br\/>He aqu\u00ed los puntos destacados de la investigaci\u00f3n que me resultaron m\u00e1s \u00fatiles en el camino:<br\/>\n<br\/><strong>Reducir los pensamientos negativos.<\/strong>\nLos estudios demuestran que tan s\u00f3lo 90 minutos de paseo por la naturaleza pueden ayudar a combatir la depresi\u00f3n y mejorar la salud mental, y que se reduce la autoconversaci\u00f3n negativa y repetitiva (un conocido factor predictivo de los episodios depresivos). Curiosamente, no se encontraron los mismos beneficios tras un paseo en un entorno urbano durante el mismo tiempo. (\u00a1As\u00ed que sal ah\u00ed fuera!)<br\/>\n<br\/><strong>Reducir el estr\u00e9s.<\/strong>\nAunque la Asociaci\u00f3n Americana de Salud P\u00fablica ha descubierto que estar en la naturaleza es suficiente para aumentar significativamente la relajaci\u00f3n y, por tanto, aliviar el estr\u00e9s por s\u00ed mismo, el senderismo combina una serie de potentes aliviadores del estr\u00e9s que te llevan un paso m\u00e1s all\u00e1.\n<strong>- Desconexi\u00f3n:<\/strong> Es raro poder desconectar del todo en un entorno urbano, y la naturaleza remota del senderismo ofrece la oportunidad de desconectar de la tecnolog\u00eda. Pasar por encima de las ra\u00edces de los \u00e1rboles y atravesar barrancos te obliga a ser consciente de lo que te rodea.\n<strong>- Tiempo para pensar:<\/strong> M\u00e1s all\u00e1 de la desconexi\u00f3n, el senderismo te proporciona tiempo sin un bombardeo de est\u00edmulos externos. Esto permite al cerebro ralentizarse, ganar perspectiva y disfrutar de un nuevo espacio mental.\n<strong>- El subid\u00f3n de endorfinas:<\/strong> Las actividades aer\u00f3bicas, como caminar, ayudan a reducir el estr\u00e9s al liberar las hormonas del bienestar: las endorfinas. Tan solo 20 minutos de ejercicio de intensidad moderada regulan el estr\u00e9s al reforzar el sistema interno de gesti\u00f3n del estr\u00e9s del organismo.<br\/>\n<br\/><strong>Aumentar la felicidad.<\/strong>\nSe ha comprobado que la felicidad es mayor en las personas rodeadas de vegetaci\u00f3n y naturaleza que en las que viven en entornos urbanos. Este concepto no es nuevo, y en Jap\u00f3n se prescribe el Shinrin-yoku o \u2018ba\u00f1o de bosque\u2019 desde la d\u00e9cada de 1980.<br\/>\n<br\/>Los momentos m\u00e1s felices de mi vida han sido en los senderos. No es de extra\u00f1ar, si tenemos en cuenta las investigaciones sobre los beneficios de la naturaleza y la actividad cardiovascular (por no hablar de la sensaci\u00f3n de logro).<br\/>\n<br\/>Hoy en d\u00eda salgo al campo dos veces al mes, ya sea para dar un paseo de dos horas o para una excursi\u00f3n de tres d\u00edas. Y aunque siempre me he centrado en los resultados f\u00edsicos, el reto, la forma f\u00edsica y la superaci\u00f3n de obst\u00e1culos, ahora tambi\u00e9n hago senderismo como una forma de meditaci\u00f3n en movimiento.<br\/>\n<br\/>No te asustes pensando que tienes que empezar a lo grande, simplemente sal ah\u00ed fuera. Es mi combustible para la felicidad. I hiked along the East Coast of Australia with my family most summers, I celebrated finishing high school with a 5-day trek in the mountains of Tasmania, I set my sights abroad and explored the Himalayas of Nepal, and spent 5 weeks walking across Spain on the Camino de Santiago. Each day was a challenge and each day was incredible.\\u0026lt;br\/\\u0026gt;\\n\\u0026lt;br\/\\u0026gt;But then, sometime in my late 20s, hiking slipped off my list of priorities.\\u0026lt;strong\\u0026gt; I lost myself to a busy work schedule and a hectic social life.\\u0026lt;\/strong\\u0026gt; My energy had dropped\u2014I felt sluggish, I was cranky and I lacked focus. Luckily for me, it was at that point that a dietitian prescribed that I \u2018take a forest bath\u2019 to remedy my problems.\\u0026lt;br\/\\u0026gt;\\n\\u0026lt;br\/\\u0026gt;Once I started researching, the message was clear: my daily stresses had depleted my battery and I was in real need of a nature fix.\\u0026lt;br\/\\u0026gt;\\n\\u0026lt;br\/\\u0026gt;This was a profound shift for me. In all my years of hiking, I had taken its impact upon creating positive mental health and well-being for granted. The connection between the two became my new obsession, and after shifting my focus back\u2014 thanks Coast Track \u2014I was able to reclaim my energy.\\u0026lt;br\/\\u0026gt;\\n\\u0026lt;br\/\\u0026gt;Here are the standout research points that I found most useful on the way:\\u0026lt;br\/\\u0026gt;\\n\\u0026lt;br\/\\u0026gt;\\u0026lt;strong\\u0026gt;Reducing negative thoughts.\\u0026lt;\/strong\\u0026gt;\\nStudies show that as little as 90 minutes walking in nature may help with depression and improve mental health, and that repetitive, negative self-talk (a known predictor for depressive episodes) is reduced. Interestingly, the same benefits were not found after a walk in an urban environment for the same amount of time. (So get out there!)\\u0026lt;br\/\\u0026gt;\\n\\u0026lt;br\/\\u0026gt;\\u0026lt;strong\\u0026gt;Reducing stress.\\u0026lt;\/strong\\u0026gt;\\nWhile the American Public Health Association has found that being in nature is enough to significantly increase relaxation and therefore relieve stress in and of itself, hiking combines a number of potent stress relievers that take you that one step further.\\n\\u0026lt;strong\\u0026gt;\u2022 Disconnection:\\u0026lt;\/strong\\u0026gt; It\u2019s rare to be able to fully unplug in an urban environment and the remote nature of hiking offers an opportunity to disconnect from technology. Scrambling over tree roots and traversing gullies forces you to be mindful of your surroundings \u2014 hiking means being fully present.\\n\\u0026lt;strong\\u0026gt;\u2022 Time to think:\\u0026lt;\/strong\\u0026gt; Beyond disconnection, hiking gives you time without a bombardment of external stimuli. This allows the brain to slow down, gain perspective and enjoy some new-found headspace.\\n\\u0026lt;strong\\u0026gt;\u2022 The endorphin rush:\\u0026lt;\/strong\\u0026gt; Aerobic activities such as walking help reduce stress by releasing \u2018feel good\u2019 hormones: endorphins. As little as 20 minutes of moderate intensity exercise regulates stress by strengthening the body\u2019s internal stress-management system.\\u0026lt;br\/\\u0026gt;\\n\\u0026lt;br\/\\u0026gt;\\u0026lt;strong\\u0026gt;Increasing happiness.\\u0026lt;\/strong\\u0026gt;\\nHappiness has been found to be greater in people surrounded by greenery and nature than people in urban environments. This is not a new concept and people in Japan have been prescribed Shinrin-yoku or \u2018forest bathing\u2019 since the 1980s.\\u0026lt;br\/\\u0026gt;\\n\\u0026lt;br\/\\u0026gt;The happiest times of my life have been on the trails. Looking at the research around the benefits of being in a natural environment and cardiovascular activity (let alone the sense of accomplishment!) this comes as no surprise.\\u0026lt;br\/\\u0026gt;\\n\\u0026lt;br\/\\u0026gt;These days I head out on the trails twice a month, whether it\u2019s a 2-hour stroll or a 3-day hike. And while I had always been focused on the physical outcomes; the challenge, the fitness and overcoming obstacles, I now also hike as a form of moving meditation.\\u0026lt;br\/\\u0026gt;\\n\\u0026lt;br\/\\u0026gt;Don\u2019t be scared by thinking you have to start big\u2014just get out there. It\u2019s my fuel for happiness. I hiked along the East Coast of Australia with my family most summers, I celebrated finishing high school with a 5-day trek in the mountains of Tasmania, I set my sights abroad and explored the Himalayas of Nepal, and spent 5 weeks walking across Spain on the Camino de Santiago. Each day was a challenge and each day was incredible.\\u0026lt;br\/\\u0026gt;\\n\\u0026lt;br\/\\u0026gt;But then, sometime in my late 20s, hiking slipped off my list of priorities.\\u0026lt;strong\\u0026gt; I lost myself to a busy work schedule and a hectic social life.\\u0026lt;\/strong\\u0026gt; My energy had dropped\u2014I felt sluggish, I was cranky and I lacked focus. Luckily for me, it was at that point that a dietitian prescribed that I \u2018take a forest bath\u2019 to remedy my problems.\\u0026lt;br\/\\u0026gt;\\n\\u0026lt;br\/\\u0026gt;Once I started researching, the message was clear: my daily stresses had depleted my battery and I was in real need of a nature fix.\\u0026lt;br\/\\u0026gt;\\n\\u0026lt;br\/\\u0026gt;This was a profound shift for me. In all my years of hiking, I had taken its impact upon creating positive mental health and well-being for granted. The connection between the two became my new obsession, and after shifting my focus back\u2014 thanks Coast Track \u2014I was able to reclaim my energy.\\u0026lt;br\/\\u0026gt;\\n\\u0026lt;br\/\\u0026gt;Here are the standout research points that I found most useful on the way:\\u0026lt;br\/\\u0026gt;\\n\\u0026lt;br\/\\u0026gt;\\u0026lt;strong\\u0026gt;Reducing negative thoughts.\\u0026lt;\/strong\\u0026gt;\\nStudies show that as little as 90 minutes walking in nature may help with depression and improve mental health, and that repetitive, negative self-talk (a known predictor for depressive episodes) is reduced. Interestingly, the same benefits were not found after a walk in an urban environment for the same amount of time. (So get out there!)\\u0026lt;br\/\\u0026gt;\\n\\u0026lt;br\/\\u0026gt;\\u0026lt;strong\\u0026gt;Reducing stress.\\u0026lt;\/strong\\u0026gt;\\nWhile the American Public Health Association has found that being in nature is enough to significantly increase relaxation and therefore relieve stress in and of itself, hiking combines a number of potent stress relievers that take you that one step further.\\n\\u0026lt;strong\\u0026gt;\u2022 Disconnection:\\u0026lt;\/strong\\u0026gt; It\u2019s rare to be able to fully unplug in an urban environment and the remote nature of hiking offers an opportunity to disconnect from technology. Scrambling over tree roots and traversing gullies forces you to be mindful of your surroundings \u2014 hiking means being fully present.\\n\\u0026lt;strong\\u0026gt;\u2022 Time to think:\\u0026lt;\/strong\\u0026gt; Beyond disconnection, hiking gives you time without a bombardment of external stimuli. This allows the brain to slow down, gain perspective and enjoy some new-found headspace.\\n\\u0026lt;strong\\u0026gt;\u2022 The endorphin rush:\\u0026lt;\/strong\\u0026gt; Aerobic activities such as walking help reduce stress by releasing \u2018feel good\u2019 hormones: endorphins. As little as 20 minutes of moderate intensity exercise regulates stress by strengthening the body\u2019s internal stress-management system.\\u0026lt;br\/\\u0026gt;\\n\\u0026lt;br\/\\u0026gt;\\u0026lt;strong\\u0026gt;Increasing happiness.\\u0026lt;\/strong\\u0026gt;\\nHappiness has been found to be greater in people surrounded by greenery and nature than people in urban environments. This is not a new concept and people in Japan have been prescribed Shinrin-yoku or \u2018forest bathing\u2019 since the 1980s.\\u0026lt;br\/\\u0026gt;\\n\\u0026lt;br\/\\u0026gt;The happiest times of my life have been on the trails. Looking at the research around the benefits of being in a natural environment and cardiovascular activity (let alone the sense of accomplishment!) this comes as no surprise.\\u0026lt;br\/\\u0026gt;\\n\\u0026lt;br\/\\u0026gt;These days I head out on the trails twice a month, whether it\u2019s a 2-hour stroll or a 3-day hike. And while I had always been focused on the physical outcomes; the challenge, the fitness and overcoming obstacles, I now also hike as a form of moving meditation.\\u0026lt;br\/\\u0026gt;\\n\\u0026lt;br\/\\u0026gt;Don\u2019t be scared by thinking you have to start big\u2014just get out there. It\u2019s my fuel for happiness.
